The Orange by PlaidTidings The Orange by PlaidTidings
project: paint a very large (3ftx3ft) close-up of an object you can fit in your hand.

My first endeavor into oil paints, and undoubtedly still my best. I adore this piece, and am so so so happy to finally have a picture of it!

Done with oil paint on canvas.

Edit: It's an orange!!! That's why it's called "The Orange"

Yes, the picture is very yellow... that's a combination of a washed out digital photo, and the simple fact that not all oranges look like the crayon by the same name.

_____________________
EDIT: Got tired of people asking me why it's a lemon, or saying that my orange wasn't orange colored, so I adjusted the color. And I swear, if I hear one more comment about how the color isn't right...

Thanks! :D

It was weeks of work to finish, but it was interestingly therapeutic working with oils

Mmmmm...juicy

No, no...seriously. Yap! That's the power of oils and traditional art! The colouring and idea of concentrating on one fruit only...very nice!

It reminds me of hot summer afternoons...

I really love the subtle textures in the orange! And you're totally right; it has more of a yellow appearance but not all oranges look exactly alike. Very nice painting!

I got those textures by dabbing the paint with one of those Bounty paper towels, with the little circle patterns on it... worked so nicely :D

That's a really great idea! (and coincidentally, my current brand of towels is Bounty as well XD )

well done ! i've only used oil paints a few times myself, and never got sch good results..
however.. title "the orange" seems to not really fit-- it looks more like a lemon to me.. or am i misinterpreting the yellow colour ?

What's to argue? There was a real live orange on the table in front of me when I painted this, thus, this is a painting of an orange. Sure the digital photo I took of this piece washed out the color some, but the original still has more yellow in it than orange.

(Also, if you ever go to a cafeteria, look at the fruit... the apples are often more purple than red, and the oranges don't look orange, they look dark yellow)

fair enough.. but i have to admit i've never seen a yellow orange, i've only seen orange oranges, but i guess i have had limited access/exposure to fruit then :P
either way, it's a lovely painting & i guess that's more important =D

you did a very nice job painting the orange, it is trully life like, the leaves are done very well also especially how there are more than just one hue in them. I do feel that the farthes leaf to the right feels a bit over proportiond in retrospects to the other leaves however. The stem is pretty much perfect, and really gives a nice counter balance with the background. I do however feel that there is too much negative space, i dont think there is enough going on, had there been just a little more to the forground i think it would have help the painting out a lot because right now even though the background is a nice subtle neutral color it kinda feels a little overpowering for my taste. Maybe had you just included something as simple as a small stem behind the orange to give the illusion that there was more than just that one orange there it would have helped.

Wow, great job, especially for your first go! The texture of the orange is great. Although oranges do come in many colours, the title with the yellowy orange hurt my brain at first (it is easily confused). After I got over the initial shock, I really liked the idea of a non-orange orange!

A lot of oranges aren't quite orange, but either a very deep yellow or actually a little bit on the reddish side... however I took a good look at the original piece recently and realized that the digital image is actually a little too yellow... the original still isn't orange orange, but it's closer than this picture of it looks. :X

actually if you really look at them a lot of oranges aren't truly orange. they're more a very deep yellow. especially the ones at the dining centers on my campus.

It's an orange. Yellow as it may be, there was still sweet juicy goodness to be had inside once I was done painting it ;)
